Outbreak
6115 North Illinois Street, Fairview Heights, 62208 Illinois, United States
The St. Clair County Health Department (SCCHD) and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) are investigating a Shigella outbreak linked to the LongHorn Steakhouse in 6115 North Illinois Street, in Fairview Heights, Illinois. As of October 11, 2024, 68 people have reported illnesses, with 9 requiring hospitalization. The affected individuals, ranging in age from 12 to 80, dined at the LongHorn Steakhouse between September 20th and September 30th, 2024. Of these, 24 have tested positive for Shigella, a bacteria that affects the digestive system. The remaining 44 reported symptoms consistent with Shigellosis, the disease caused by Shigella bacteria. The outbreak was discovered after the SCCHD received lab reports confirming Shigella infection in some individuals who had eaten at the LongHorn Steakhouse. The restaurant voluntarily closed on October 2, 2024, and has been fully cooperating with the SCCHD and IDPH in their investigation. The health departments have conducted environmental assessments of the restaurant and provided guidance on safe food handling and proper handwashing protocols to prevent further spread of the disease.
The SCCHD continues to monitor the situation, receiving test results from patrons and staff. Restaurant staff are required to have two negative Shigella tests, at least 24 hours apart, before returning to work. The SCCHD has also alerted area physicians about the outbreak and provided guidance for patients exhibiting Shigellosis symptoms.
Shigellosis symptoms typically begin one to two days after infection and last about a week. The disease spreads easily, often through contaminated water, food, surfaces, or objects. Good hygiene practices, including thorough handwashing and routine cleaning and sanitizing of kitchen utensils and surfaces, can help reduce the risk of infection.
If you or a loved one are harmed or experiencing any symptoms, it is important to report it. Reporting can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
