Clam chowder food poisoning often comes from bacterial fermentation in the rotting clam, clamshell, and clam broth. The bacteria responsible for the infection can include E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, or Vibrio cholerae. The most common symptom is profuse vomiting, combined with diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
