Suspected food poisoning. Symptoms: Nausea, Stomach Pain, Cramps, Headache
Suspected source: Great Value sodium-free salt alternative
Onset: 4 to 12 hours
Duration: Several Weeks
Sick: 2 people
Additional information: We use this salt as an additive to our daily water intake as a way to increase our... See More potassium levels (think homemade Gatorade). It is one of very few ingredients, and was being made fresh and ingested daily. We both noticed the bottle smelled badly of a plasticy, petroleum smell, but figured it was just the cheap bottle itself. Over the next few months of use, I began to have debilitating headaches, constant cramps and stomacn upset, and ended up on several medications from my doctor, thinking it was likely stress related. It wasn't until recently that we saw others saying they had also smelled the awful bottle smell, but unlike us, used it in a way they could taste the "salt" itself (without any additional flavorings), saying it was bitter and chemical tasting. We switched brands to Original No Salt, and my symptoms went away shortly after, and I no longer have to take either of the medications prescribed regularly by my doctor since the switch away from Great Value. Someone who left a review directly on said they had it independently tested, and found it contained toxic chemicals, but did not specify what exactly. But in light of them being in a current lawsuit for their spices containing high levels of lead, arsenic, and cadmium, I can't imagine what was found to be a good thing. | Symptoms: Nausea, Stomach Pain, Cramps, Headache See Less

My 2 kids would get cramps followed by diarrhea once about every other day for a couple months until I discovered it was this juice causing it. They'd drink 6-8oz every morning. No cramps since switching to other apple juice brands. So there is something in this consistently that is harmful! | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Other, Cramps, Itching, Something else See Less

After the kids went to bed, my husband and I made a loaf of Great Value frozen garlic bread as a treat. We do this often, so our symptoms weren't from the greasiness. It was a leftovers day, so that was the only food we shared all... See More day. About 2 hours after, he was hit with severe diarrhea and cramping. About 3-4 hours after, I awoke with severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The next morning, he still has GI pain and I still have cramping, nausea, and lack of hunger. None of our kids are sick and our symptoms hit at such similar times that I'm pretty sure it's food poisoning, not illness. Whole family had cooked Great Value spaghetti within 2 hours after eating 7 hours of vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting See Less

its very unlikely the pasta is what caused this,, pasta can only cause food poisoning if left out so it might have been something else

Hi, thanks for your comment. It is possible to get food poisoning from pasta. Once it is cooked, pasta is a food poisoning risk even after reheating from heat-resistant toxins formed by Bacillus cereus bacteria. Symptoms can include stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, seldom vomiting, but no fever and can be deadly if untreated.

Got Great Value Glacier Ranch flavored tortilla chips and ate some between 5:30PM and 7:30PM, went to bed around 10:00PM and woke to massive stomach pains around 3:30AM and proceeded to vomit until 4:30AM. Chips tasted like plastic and there were very hard pieces of something that... See More couldn’t be chewed on the chips themselves. Still have some chips left and continued eating because I figured they just tasted bad because they were cheap. | Symptoms: Nausea, Vomiting, Stomach Pain See Less
