I got food poisoning the last night of my stay. This was on June 14, 2019. I believe I ate some contaminated seafood at the Mexican Restaurant on the resort complex. This Mexican restaurant was in a more remote part of the resort, so I could have … See More
gotten sick from some food that was washed in contaminated water in this area. Anyway, on the night I got sick my symptoms were immediate and acute. I was up all night with severe stomach cramps and diarrhea. I was scheduled to fly home the next day, so I took Imodium, and made it home. Once home, after the Imodium wore off, my symptoms returned. I continued to have acute diarrhea 2-3 times after every meal, and I experienced diarrhea all night long. Initially, my doctor treated me with antibiotics for travelers sickness, but the symptoms returned after I finished the course of antibiotics. The dysentery continued until I lost ten pounds, and began to black out. I now suffer from chronic dysentery. I’m under the care of a GI specialist, who is helping me to determine what caused the sickness, and to recover my health. Along with the chronic dysentery, I suffer from joint aches, severe fatigue, dry mouth, thirst, and dizziness. I am not the only person who got sick at this resort. The night I fell ill, I met a woman who’d gotten so acutely ill that the resort staff put her in an ambulatory vehicle they called a “hospital” to administer fluids and antibiotics to her. She said they made her lie in this “hospital” for 3 days so she could be recovered enough to be flown home. In general, the sanitation conditions of this place were sketchy. My room was dirty when I arrived; the sheets on the beds had not been changed, the air conditioner leaked, and there was a hole in the wall. The bottled water provided for us clearly came from the resort’s own tap water system because many of the lids had been tampered with. I don’t know how sanitary this water was, or how close it was to the sewage system. Many of the guests were told not to flush used toilet paper down the toilets because the plumbing was not working. In fact, there was rarely any hot water in the rooms, and our toilet broke on a regular basis. So, it is likely that a lot of fecal matter was not being properly disposed of at this resort. All I know is that I have been sick since I stayed at this place, and I have had to shell out thousands of dollars for tests and GI doctors. I read up on the safety precautions before traveling in the DR. While there, I was careful not to drink the tap water, and I only ate fruit with rind on it, like melons and pineapple. I mainly stuck to hot beverages when not drinking the bottled water. I thought I’d be okay eating the prepared meals in the resort’s restaurants because this is supposed to be a “luxury” resort, but apparently not. I still got very sick, and I remain sick, because I stayed at this place, and ate at its restaurants.  | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Nausea, Dizziness, Fatigue, Body Ache, Cramps

I went to the Dominican Republic for a bachelor party and we stayed at lifestyles resort. On the second night I had to return to my room because I started to feel ill. I was getting hot flashes and dizzy. I returned to my room drank some … See More
bottled water and laid down to rest. I woke up hours later with terrible stomach pains and nausea. From then on out it was a nightmare. I was projectile vomiting, had diarrhea and felt extremely hot. On the second day I couldn’t take it anymore and visited the resort clinic. They took my temperature and gave me some meds for my stomach. I purchased some pedalite as well. I was throwing up and going to the bathroom so much I was dehydrated. Hours later, multiple bottles of pedialite and I was worse then ever. I took the meds as recommended and n change. On the third night i woke up very weak dizzy and call the lobby number saying I needed medical attention. My friends got me out of my villa and we waited for the golf cart to come get me. I couldn’t stomach gagging. My body had nothing left to throw up. I remember thinking I’m going to die here something isn’t right. I get on the golf cart and driven to the clinic again. They say I’m very dehydrated and want to give me an injection. I was very nervous about this. I ask the doctor (which isn’t a doctor I find out)what the injection was and she couldn’t really tell me. She just says “if I don’t take it I won’t get better” so 15 20 minutes of thinking about it I finally decide to go through with it. I take the shot. I get driving back to my villa I drink a bottle of pedialite and try to sleep. I have one more day to go. The next day I have no change. Still vomiting still diarrhea, terrible cramps. So this is 3 days of being sick so far. Long story short It’s time to go home. I get myself together best I can. I upgraded my seat to first class at the airport so I’m closer to the bathroom. The person next to me is suffering from a similar illness. Now my head is really thinking. Lucky I only use the bathroom once on the plane. I get back to the states and I immediately see my local doctor. He said it’s a severe food poisoning. I get meds for a week and after about 10 more days I finally was able to go to the bathroom normally. My stomach didn’t feel right for a few weeks after that. I will never return to that country period. I’ve heard multiple stories of people getting ill there. Not from the news but local people. Travelers be warned. Save alittle more money and go somewhere nicer.  | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Fever, Nausea, Vomiting, Dizziness, Stomach Pain, Weakness, Cramps

February 2018 My family and I visited the Lifestyles Resort. 7 out of 10 of us feel ill one evening after eating at the resort. Within a few hours of the meal I experiences extreme Nausea, a High Fever, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Shaking, etc. I have had food … See More
poisoning in the past and this was 10 times worse. I was careful not to drink water from the tap. I even went to the extreme of brushing my teeth with bottled water. I do not drink much, but that day I had several frozen margaritas from the Ocean Bar and attended the family dinner at a villa on the resort grounds. The resort prepared a special dinner at the house for my family. The dinner included shrimp, lobster, steak, and side dishes. I consumed all three proteins - Seafood and Steak. Both my parents, and several friends also feel ill that evening. Also, you can clearly see a stream of smelly sewage water running from the resort out to the ocean. This is between the Saffron Restaurant and the Confesi Palm Resort (Part of the Lifestyles Resort). Also further down the beach you can see and smell another stream of sewage water running from the Lifestyles resort. Clearly this property has issues with the treatment of its sewage and management of water. Additionally, I believe their food handling is not properly done as I have seen food trucks that were unrefrigerated delivering food the numerous villas and restaurants around the resort. If food is exposed to extreme temperatures and not properly refrigerated you will have contaminated food. I will never return to this resort or the Dominican Republic. I think the entire country lacks in basic food safety knowledge.  | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Fever, Nausea, Vomiting, Shaking

she was so dehydrated. Best we can tell, despite our best efforts to avoid ingesting the local water (which we knew was not safe) the coffee pot in our room was washed with tap water, not filtered water, and so she got infected that way. I ended up with cramping and stool troubles a few days in, resulting in a steady diet of pepto bismal to keep myself functioning, my brother caught a bad throat infection from sources unknown, and on the flight back, my father also had explosive diarrhea, which he contained by downing anti-diarrheal medication, and is now vomiting the morning after.

I have no specifics on further cases, but on the one excursion I went out on there were three other people who had gotten sick with diarrhea. It was a group of 27. Symptoms began around the 10th and 11th of June, it is now the 16th, and most of us are finally starting to do better.  | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Cramps, Dehydration
