Austrian Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Poultry Products

4 months ago source foodsafetynews.com

Austria

More than 30 people have been sickened in a Salmonella outbreak in Austria. The outbreak involves the Salmonella Enteritidis strain and has affected individuals across six federal states, including Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, and Vienna.

The Ministry of Health has tasked the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) with investigating the outbreak, in collaboration with local authorities. Since December 2024, 35 people have fallen ill, with ten requiring hospitalization. The outbreak strain is identified as Salmonella Enteritidis with sequence type (ST) 11 and complex type (CT) 14117. The affected individuals include 17 women and 18 men, with ages ranging from 1 to 83 years old and a median age of 24.

The outbreak was discovered through positive test results from food and veterinary samples at poultry farms, suggesting that eggs, egg products, or chicken meat could be the source of the infection. However, an exact source has not yet been confirmed.

In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
