A significant food poisoning outbreak has affected over 60 guests at a tourist resort in Nicotera Marina, Italy, due to suspected botulinum toxin exposure. The outbreak, linked to hot dogs and french fries served at the resort's restaurant, has resulted in five hospitalizations, with victims including tourists from Naples and Caserta. The outbreak symptoms, consistent with botulinum poisoning, included vomiting and diarrhea, affecting both adults and children. In response, the Carabinieri Anti-Adulteration and Health Unit (NAS) intervened, ordering the restaurant's closure as a precautionary measure. Authorities seized over 300 kilograms of food products for laboratory analysis to identify the contamination source.
The problem was discovered after multiple guests exhibited symptoms shortly after their meal, prompting an immediate investigation. The Carabinieri's initial actions included closing the kitchen facilities and destroying stored food items. Frankfurters, part of the meal served before the outbreak, were specifically selected for testing to determine their role in the incident.
