Monserrato, 09042 Sardinia, Italy
Italian health officials are investigating a botulism outbreak linked to guacamole, with at least six people falling ill in Sardinia. The cases were reported after attendees consumed food at a traveling festival in Monserrato from July 22 to 24. The outbreak has prompted a recall of Metro Chef avocado pulp due to potential contamination. The regional health department has initiated an epidemiological investigation, alerting local health authorities in Cagliari and Ogliastra. The festival, which was scheduled to continue to Tortolì, has been suspended. Some of the affected individuals have been hospitalized, and local media suggest that up to 11 people might be infected. The Cagliari Public Prosecutor’s Office has also launched an investigation into the incident.
The issue was discovered following reports of illness among festival attendees. A recall notice from the Ministry of Health identified Metro Chef avocado pulp as a potential source of the botulinum toxin. The implicated products, distributed by MCC Trading International in Germany, Salud Food Group Europe, and Agroempaques S.A of Peru, have specific lot codes and expiry dates. Botulinum poisoning, caused by Clostridium botulinum bacteria, can lead to severe symptoms, including paralysis and difficulty breathing.
