Botulism Outbreak Linked to Olive and Almond Cream in Italy

2 days ago source webgate.ec.europa.eu

Italy

Two cases of botulism have been reported in Italy following the consumption of Olive and Almond Cream, a product categorized under soups, broths, sauces, and condiments. The outbreak, notified on May 15, 2026, involves the pathogen Clostridium botulinum and has affected two individuals.

The outbreak was classified as a serious risk, prompting an alert notification. The product, known as "Crema di olive e mandorle" in Italian, was distributed in Italy and flagged for follow-up in Malta. The Italian authorities have been actively investigating the situation, with follow-ups conducted in regions such as Veneto, Sicilia, and Toscana to gather additional information and conduct sampling and analysis.

The problem was discovered through reports of food poisoning, which led to the identification of the botulism cases. The notification was validated by the European Commission, and a public warning was issued in Malta, where no stock of the product remains. The investigation continues as authorities work to ensure consumer safety.
