A deadly outbreak of botulism linked to contaminated broccoli has resulted in the death of one man and the hospitalization of nine others in Italy. The outbreak, traced to a street vendor in Diamante, Cosenza, has prompted a nationwide recall of broccoli. Health officials suspect the presence of the botulinum toxin, a rare but potentially fatal pathogen.The victim, Luigi Di Sarno, 52, was traveling with his family when they consumed broccoli and sausage sandwiches from a food stand. Shortly after, all five family members exhibited symptoms consistent with botulism, including breathing difficulties and muscle paralysis. Two individuals remain in serious condition. The outbreak has been linked to improperly processed broccoli, which can harbor the Clostridium botulinum bacteria responsible for the toxin.
The issue was discovered when Mr. Di Sarno fell ill while driving and was forced to stop in Basilicata, where he later died. Emergency services responded, and an investigation was launched. Authorities have seized jars of broccoli in oil and the food truck in question. The Paola Public Prosecutor's Office is conducting an inquiry to determine the source and spread of the toxin.
