August 24, 2021

CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are collecting different types of data to investigate two multistate outbreaks of Salmonella infections—one involving Salmonella Typhimurium infections and one with Salmonella Infantis infections, both with likely source Italian-style meats.

As of August 24, 2021, 36 people infected with either Salmonella outbreak strain have been reported:

- 23 people are part of the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak from 14 states (AZ, CA, CO, IL, IN, MD, MI, MN, NV, OH, UT, VA, WA and WI). 9 people were hospitalized and no deaths were reported Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 30, 2021, to July 27, 2021

- 13 people are part of the Salmonella Infantis outbreak from 7 states (AZ, CA, MN, NY, OR, TX, and WA). 3 people were hospitalized and no deaths were reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 9, 2021, to June 24, 2021.

People in both outbreaks report eating salami, prosciutto, and other meats that can be found in antipasto or charcuterie assortments before getting sick. Investigators are working to identify specific contaminated products and determine if the two outbreaks are linked to the same food source. The investigation is ongoing.

In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance.
