An outbreak of foodborne illness linked to unpermitted street vendors selling "tacos al pastor" has sickened dozens in Maricopa County. The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department (MCESD) has identified the pathogen involved and is taking action to address the issue. To date, 111 complaints have been investigated, resulting in 55 food seizures and the confiscation of over 7,000 pounds of unsafe meat.Over the past three months, MCESD has intensified its efforts to regulate unpermitted mobile food vendors after receiving numerous reports of illness. The investigation revealed that the vendors were selling "tacos al pastor" using unsafe practices, such as operating without proper permits and using spoiled meat. In response, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has directed MCESD to seize unsafe meat, issue citations, and shut down non-compliant operations.
The problem was discovered after a series of illness reports were traced back to these vendors, who typically operate near sidewalks and parking lots.
