Outbreak
Spain
The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) is investigating a botulism outbreak in Spain linked to potato omelets. They have received 4 confirmed cases and 2 probable cases. These cases have occurred in various autonomous communities, and health services in these regions have been informed to enhance early detection in case of any new suspected cases of botulism. The AESAN has provided all available information to the relevant authorities in the autonomous communities for conducting the necessary investigations regarding the products that may have been consumed by the affected individuals. While the same company produces the omelets in at least 3 of the confirmed cases and one probable case, no evidence has been established thus far linking the products or processes to the cause. However, investigations continue in collaboration with the production company.
Investigations are being carried out to determine if there are any unsafe products in the market or if there are any deviations in production, distribution, storage, or transportation processes that could justify the existence of this risk. AHORRAMAS, as a precautionary measure due to the lack of certainty, has decided to withdraw from sale the products indicated by the epidemiological surveys while awaiting further progress in the investigations.
In case you experienced Botulism symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
