Salmonella Outbreak linked to Tesco Deli Sausage

3 weeks ago source dailymail.co.uk

United Kingdom

More than 80 people across Britain have fallen ill due to a Salmonella outbreak linked to a dry-cured sausage sold exclusively at Tesco. The outbreak has been traced to a deli-style meat product, prompting an urgent recall amid concerns it could cause fever, diarrhea, and severe stomach cramps. There were 84 confirmed infections identified by late February.

The affected product, Bastides Saucisson Sec, is supplied by the French company Sacor. The recall involves 200g packs with a best-before date of March 4, 2026, after Salmonella bacteria were discovered in a batch. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported that the outbreak was first detected at the end of January. Laboratory testing indicated that the infections were caused by the same strain of monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium, suggesting a common source.

The outbreak was discovered after scientists noticed an increase in Salmonella cases using whole genome sequencing data. Investigators found that a significant number of patients had consumed cured pork products before falling ill. Further analysis, including supermarket loyalty card data, pointed to the imported ready-to-eat cured pork product sold at Tesco as the likely source. Tesco removed the product from sale during the investigation, and subsequent testing by the supplier
