What is Viral Gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis refers to an infection of the gut and can be caused by food contaminated with viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Symptoms range in severity and can start within hours of eating contaminated food. The term “stomach flu” is commonly used for the infection, but this is incorrect as the infection affects the intestines.

Diagnosis: Gastroenteritis

week. The affected age group ranges throughout early childhood, though all are being advised to monitor their health closely.

In response to the outbreak, health officials are stressing the importance of proper hygiene, particularly regular hand washing with soap and water, as this could prevent further spreading of the virus. The public is also being cautioned to stay home if feeling unwell and to ensure children remain home for 48 hours after symptoms have subsided to avoid the risk of transmitting the disease to others.

Gastro symptoms include nausea, stomach pains, fever, headaches, a loss of appetite and in severe cases, vomiting, and diarrhoea. In case you experience these symptoms, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care

September 19, 2023

The Victoria's Department of Health and the Port Phillip Council are investigating a gastroenteritis outbreak linked to a wedding reception at The Park Melbourne, Albert Park, which took place on September 16. More than half of the 300 attendees at a wedding reception were affected by this outbreak. The source of the outbreak is still under investigation, but the Department of Health said the incident was not linked to the ongoing cluster of listeria cases in the state.

Several severely impacted guests were transported to Sunshine and Royal Melbourne hospitals for urgent medical attention. 2 individuals were healthy enough for hospital discharge by Tuesday. As investigations continue, concerned guests are urged to monitor their health.

A "precautionary deep clean" of the venue has been initiated, with the approval of Port Phillip Council.

In case you experience vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
