Hotel Buffet: Illness Outbreak - Hotel, Corralejo Canarias

4 months ago reported by user-jqxj3284 business

Hotel Riu Oliva Beach Resort, Avenida Corralejo Grandes Playas, Corralejo, Spain

s/n Avenida Corralejo Grandes Playas, Corralejo, 35660 Canarias, Spain

On day 3 I became ill, stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting. Food in the hotel is not hot, only warm and when dishes run out they add new meat to existing pots instead of taking the old away.
My mother and daughter are also stopping there now in a different room to us and my mother at the minute has the same thing, leaving them both stuck in the room, holiday ruined for 4 people | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Stomach Pain, Fever, Cramps, Chills

My last 2 four week holidays at this hotel were ruined for this same reason. The first time we wrongly assumed that the illness was down to contracting covid whilst there. However on our last visit in February 2023 we were both struck down with the exact same symptoms as the previous year. We emailed reception to advise them that we were ill, however, both messages were ignored. We were fortunate enough to have had a ground floor apartment in the annex, and had nice neighbours who picked us up water from the nearby supermarket and medicine from Coralejo. When i was well enough, i put on a mask and headed to the reception to report this to the manager. Surprisingly en, he was not available and a very rude and defensive man at reception dismissed me claiming at first that i must have picked up the food poisoning outside of the hotel. When i told him that i had not left the hotel, he said i must have picked it up on the flight 8 days earlier. He then went on to say that i have been the only person claiming to have been sick, despite the fact that the lady next to me was reporting to another receptionist that her husband had been violently sick for 3 days. The food hygiene standards in this hotel were non existant, pork and chicken being served undercooked, i watched on cook constantly use his mobile phone then go on to prepare pizzas by hand. I saw another lady, cough into her glove immediately before she use the same hand to move cold, left over broccoli to the top of a new tray. Not once did i see one staff member wash their hands at times when it was essential. We lost 10 days of a 28 day holiday confined to our room or terrace, during which time we couldn't meet up with friends. Unless you want to have a miserable holiday, AVOID at all costs. Incidentally, when i reported this to Tui at the resort, the young lady insisted that i report this once i get home, because it has been going on for almost 2 years, and the hotel simply sweep it under the carpet. We did report it, and was told it could take up to 6 weeks for an initial investigation, after 12 weeks we contacted Tui again, only to be told a full investigation could take up to 6 months. Tui have obviously chosen to also sweep it under the carpet as they say they have nothing on their system, despite having given them their reference number.
