Botulism Outbreak in France linked to Tortillas by Palacios (Spain)

France
Palacios, a Spanish food manufacturer, has initiated a recall of several tortilla products following two confirmed cases of botulism in Brittany, France. The affected products, sold in supermarkets across the country, have been linked to the presence of Clostridium botulinum bacteria, as confirmed by the Pasteur Institute's National Reference Center for Botulism. The outbreak has prompted a health alert, with the General Directorate for Food (DGAL) collaborating with Spanish authorities to identify and recall all potentially contaminated tortilla batches. The recall specifically targets tortillas sold under the "Itineraire de nos saveurs" brand in INTERMARCHE and NETTO stores, as well as unbranded tortillas in CARREFOUR stores. These products include onion tortillas and plain tortillas, both in 500g packages.
The issue was discovered after laboratory analyses confirmed the presence of the botulinum toxin in tortilla remnants consumed by one of the affected individuals. This discovery led to a swift response from health authorities and the manufacturer to prevent further cases. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant for symptoms of botulism and to dispose of any affected products.
