October 20, 2023

Officials of San Diego County have reported an outbreak of Salmonella linked to raw milk products from Raw Farm LLC, a Fresno-based producer. 9 cases have been recorded, 3 children from the affected group have been hospitalized due to severe illness.

Raw Farm LLC's raw milk or milk products are believed to have caused the illness. The 9 affected San Diego county residents have reported consumption of the company's raw milk products during the week prior to the onset of their symptoms. This strain of Salmonella is typically found in the intestinal tracts of humans and animals and poses risks to public health.

Unpasteurized or "raw" milk is at a higher risk for containment by harmful germs, such as Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, and other bacteria, viruses, and parasites. While pasteurization effectively eliminates most of these germs, the consumption of 'natural milk' poses significant health risks. Hence, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises against the consumption of raw milk and related products. This advice is especially vital for high-risk groups which include older adults, children below the age of 5 and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Salmonella infection usually manifests as diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting, and headache. These symptoms typically appear six hours to six days post-consumption of contaminated food, lasting around 4-7 days. In some cases, severe conditions leading to hospitalization may occur.

The County of San Diego HHSA, in collaboration with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), are further investigating illnesses related to consumption of raw milk and milk products.
