Spoiled Seafood, Poor Sanitation - Joe's Cafe, Santa Barbara California

4 years ago reported by user-zmyw1421 business

Joe's Cafe, State Street, Santa Barbara, CA, USA

536 State Street, Santa Barbara, 93101 California, United States

A friend of mine and I ate lunch there, 4/24/21, around 1 PM. Both our French fry orders were soggy, tasteless, and definitely not crisp. My calamari, sautéed in butter, had an off taste to it. The butter/cooking oil used to sauté it was apparently rancid. The calamari had not been rinsed under cold, running water prior to being cooked. There was a faint taste and smell of spoiled seafood. My friend's salmon had suffered a similar fate. I became ill about 12 hours later: fever, nausea, vomiting. Slightly better now after a very miserable morning and afternoon. My friend did not report any ill effects. My meal was apparently cross contaminated with fecal bacteria, either by raw poultry in the kitchen prep areas and/or by staff failing to properly cleanse their hands. The restrooms were blocked, at that time, by numerous propane tanks that were in the hallway. Hopefully staff were able to cleanse their hands else where. Good place to avoid - bad food and bad sanitation. | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Fever
