A salmonella outbreak in Barbastro has been traced to raw tomatoes used in tapas during the local Wine Fair, affecting over 500 people. Four individuals remain hospitalized. The company responsible for the tapas has voluntarily closed for disinfection efforts. The outbreak was confirmed by the Dirección General de Salud Pública, which identified salmonella in the crushed tomatoes used as a base for various tapas. Nuria Gayán Margelí detailed that the pathogen was found in both the tomatoes and the toast, with 14 people requiring hospitalization, including eight adults and six children. Currently, one child and three adults are still hospitalized in Barbastro.
The investigation began after a rise in cases was noted on August 4. Initial steps included surveys to determine common food consumption among those affected. Five establishments were initially suspected based on risk food information and testimonies. Salmonella was also found in kitchen utensils, such as blenders and brushes used for spreading the tomato. Food handlers at the implicated establishment tested positive for salmonella as well. The company has since destroyed the remaining tomatoes and is undergoing a thorough disinfection process.
