Food Safety Report - Chobani Oatmilk, San Diego California

5 months ago reported by user-zfxw6152

Chobani Oatmilk, San Diego, CA, USA

San Diego, California, United States

On Sept. 4th, 2025, my sister baked with Chobani Oatmilk original recipe. She is lactose intolerant and I’m severely allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. I’m on Xolair for my allergies, but I still have reactions. I’m also allergic to raw eggs, but due to the nature of the exposure, this would be impossible (thoroughly baked and an egg free recipe). This is relevant to the incident, as this was an allergic reaction. Though the coffee cake she made was fantastic, I noted my first bite made my mouth itchy. I continued until bite 3 where the itching became unbearable and forced me to stop. At that point, we knew I was having an allergic reaction to something in the cake. I tried a tiny sample of each ingredient on its own to determine the source of the allergen, and bingo- a tiny sip of oat milk caused intense itching. This didn’t make sense to me since it was specifically labeled “no nuts” and had no “made on same equipment” or “may contain” warnings as they are legally required to when made on the same line. However, there were also no true allergens of mine on the entire oatmilk ingredient list- I’ve since tested each one individually to make sure I haven’t developed a new allergy. By process of elimination, it had to be nuts. Despite the Xolair, I ended up with intense itching in my mouth and throat, throat tightening, stuffy nose, difficulty breathing, coughing, stridor, nausea, stomach pain, burping, spitting bile, tachycardia, anxiety, and a sinus headache. Rescue medication was required, and symptoms lasted for about 3 hours. Based on symptoms, I believe there was substantial (more than trace) cross-contact with a peanut or tree nut with this product, and the labeling of this product misleading at best. | Symptoms: Nausea, Something else, Stomach Pain, Headache, Itching, Cough, Burping, Bile
