Expired Sourdough Causes Illness - Trader Joe's, Phoenix Arizona

4 years ago reported by user-vzyp5975

Sprouted Sourdough Bread, Trader Joe’s, Arizona, USA

Phoenix, Arizona, United States

I was there looking for a quality bread low in gluten and decided to buy the Sprouted Sourdough Bread made with organic sprouted wheat berries. I noticed the expiration date was for 3 or 4 days from when I bought it, but I’ve bought bread in the past and I figured I would be almost done with it by then and it wouldn’t hurt to eat it one day after that. Well I was wrong. I made myself a nice sandwich for lunch with ingredients I am used to eating, so I am sure they were not the cause of my episode, (turkey breast sliced, tomato, mayo, Dijon mustard, few leaves of fresh spinach, ) and two pieces of bread to hold it together. About 15 minutes after eating, I experienced chills, a flushed face, and intense pain in my intestines area, and I rushed to the bathroom and had severe diarrhea followed by slight nausea. I never have this kind of reaction, so I knew it was food poisoning. The likely culprit is this expired bread since it is notorious for its breads spoiling quickly due to the fact that they don’t use artificial preservatives. I should have known better but I liked the bread’s taste and quality so much I didn’t think much of it. The rest of the day I was still in pain as my stomach recovered from the incident and had to eat crackers and sprite and curl up in a ball on the couch. | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Nausea, Chills, Stomach Pain
