An outbreak of Salmonella has affected 11 care residents at Points West Living in Red Deer, Alberta, no one has been hospitalized and no deaths were reported. The outbreak was first detected on March 25 and Alberta Health Services (AHS) is working with the facility to limit... the spread. AHS has declared that no other facilities in the Central Zone are dealing with an outbreak. The source of the infection is still unknown.
In response to the outbreak, AHS has ordered testing of residents and staff and has been onsite at Points West to inspect the kitchen, review food handling and hand hygiene practices, and provide recommendations for enhanced cleaning. As it is possible for Salmonella to spread person-to-person, AHS is emphasizing the importance of good hand hygiene to prevent further spread. Salmonella infection can vary in severity and the elderly and those with weaker immune systems are at a higher risk.
In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
