Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Home Delivery Meals

Update November 21st, 2025:
The CDC has confirmed that a total of 21 people across 13 states were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis (Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin). Illness onset dates ranged from July 24 to October 3, 2025. Of 19 people with available information, 8 were hospitalized. No deaths were reported.

Epidemiologic data showed that 87% of interviewed individuals (13 of 15) reported eating a Metabolic Meals prepared menu item in the week before becoming ill.

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) confirmed that bacterial samples from affected individuals were genetically closely related, indicating a common source. Laboratory analysis also found the strain showed predicted resistance to nalidixic acid and reduced susceptibility to ciprofloxacin.

Metabolic Meals has recalled select home delivery meal products due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recalled products are no longer available for sale.

September 7th, 2025:
Metabolic Meals, a home delivery meal service, is at the center of a multistate Salmonella outbreak affecting 16 individuals across 10 states (Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin in the United States). The outbreak has resulted in seven hospitalizations but no deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health officials are actively investigating the source of the contamination.

The outbreak has been traced to specific meals delivered by Metabolic Meals during the week of July 28, 2025.

The problem was discovered after several individuals reported Salmonella symptoms, prompting an investigation by health officials. Metabolic Meals is cooperating with authorities and has proactively contacted customers who purchased the affected meals. The investigation remains open as officials work to pinpoint the exact source of the contamination.
