Variety of Cake Mixes - linked to Multistate Outbreak of E. coli O121 infections

2 years ago source www.cdc.gov

Outbreak

United States

CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are collecting different types of data to investigate a multistate outbreak of E. coli O121 infections linked to cake mix.

As of July 27, 2021, 16 people infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O121 have been reported from 12 states (IA, IL, IN, MA, MI, NE, OH, OR, SC, UT, VA and WA). 7 people were hospitalized and no deaths were reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from February 26, 2021 to June 21, 2021. The investigation is ongoing.

Sick people in this outbreak reported tasting or eating raw cake batter made from a variety of cake mixes. A single brand or type of cake mix has not been linked to the illnesses.

CDC advises people not to eat raw cake batter, whether made from a mix or homemade. Eating raw cake batter can make you sick. Raw cake batter can contain harmful bacteria. Bacteria are killed only when raw batter is baked or cooked.

In case you are experiencing E. coli symptoms such as watery diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting; stomach cramps; and mild fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance.
