In the first half of July 2024, Sweden has seen a significant rise in Campylobacter infections, a bacteria typically found in the intestines of chickens. Nearly 100 cases were reported weekly, with the numbers escalating to 160 and 210 in the following weeks.
The surge in Campylobacter cases has been traced back to broiler chickens, with the increase coinciding with a previously noted rise in the bacteria within these flocks. The infections have been reported across multiple regions, indicating a widespread issue.
This finding underscores the importance of proper handling and cooking of chicken to reduce the risk of infection.
In case you experience Campylobacter symptoms such as diarrhea (often bloody), fever, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
