Food Safety Report: Carniceria Guanajuato in Chicago, IL linked to Salmonella Outbreak

1 year ago source chicago.gov business

Outbreak

3140 North California Avenue, Chicago, 60618 Illinois, United States

The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella linked to the prepared food from Carniceria Guanajuato taqueria located at 3140 N California in Chicago that has affected 20 people and led to 10 hospitalizations.

As reported, all 20 individuals affected consumed food prepared at the Carniceria Guanajuato. The identified cases appear to have originated from those who have eaten the food since August 29, 2023. The taqueria voluntarily ceased operations on September 8, 2023, working closely with the CDPH to investigate the source of the infections. Health officials advise anyone who purchased prepared food from this location since August 29, 2023 to discard it immediately.

CDPH conducted an environmental assessment at the grocery store, offering advice on maintaining food safety and proper environmental cleaning to curb disease transmission. Additionally, an alert has been issued to local physicians, furnishing them with medical guidance regarding the outbreak.

Salmonella infection typically manifests within 6 to 72 hours after exposure and can last from four to seven days. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. While most healthy individuals recover without treatment, older individuals or those with weakened immune systems may require medical intervention. The CDPH will continue monitoring the situation for additional reports affiliated with this outbreak.

In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
