The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has announced a multi-country Shigella sonnei outbreak involving the United States and many countries in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA). The outbreak began in September 2022 and has continued to evolve rapidly during November and December 2022.... See More
As of February 16th, 2023, 10 EU/EEA countries and the UK reported and the US reported 221 confirmed Shigella sonnei infections and 37 possible cases linked to travel to Cape Verde, in the image below you can find more details. While the exact source of the outbreak has not been identified, investigations are ongoing in Cabo Verde. It is believed that the infection was spread through food, including through infected food handlers, as well as through person-to-person contact.
The strain of Shigella involved in the outbreak is resistant to trimethoprim and streptomycin, and in some cases, multidrug resistance has been detected. Many cases have been linked to all-inclusive hotels located in the region of Santa Maria on the island of Sal. The most recent cases were reported in Sweden on 19 January 2023.
In response to the outbreak, ECDC is urging public health authorities in the EU/EEA to increase awareness among healthcare professionals and is working with the World Health Organization to support investigations in Cabo Verde. To prevent further spread of the infection, ECDC is recommending that people practice good handwashing with soap and water and take additional care with food and drink when traveling abroad. People with shigellosis should not attend school, handle food, or provide care for children or patients while ill.
In case you are experiencing Shigellosis symptoms such as watery diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting; stomach pain; and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

Saturday night I went to dinner with some friends, chose to eat the Saint Peter fillet with rustic potatoes and vegetables, imagining it to be one of the lightest dishes because it was a fish and being on the same list as the salmon on the menu... See More (where there was a super beautiful picture of the salmon and apparently very healthy). The dish took a long time to arrive, when the attendant arrived she didn't hand me a plate, but a metal plate on top of a wood, all filled with greasy oil and a very ugly presentation for a restaurant (it was more like a roadside bar dish). My mistake was not returning that order. It didn't taste good, it didn't taste, it wasn't the kind of dish I would be served at Applebee's, at least not in view of the previous years I went there. A few hours later I started severe food poisoning, with lots of abdominal pain, nausea, shortness of breath, vomiting and diarrhea, the complete package. And what was supposed to be a fun Saturday night became that. | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Shortness of Breath See Less

As of February 11, 2021, CDC reported seven people infected with the Listeria monocytogenes outbreak strain in four states. Abuelito has ceased production and distribution of the products while the FDA and El Abuelito continue their investigation into the cause of the problem.
As the FDA stated, on this outbreak investigation, the Connecticut Department of Public Health collected samples of fresh, soft Hispanic-style cheese products from the El Abuelito brand from a store where a sick person bought cheeses. The analysis of the sample showed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in El Abuelito fresh cheese samples sold in 10 oz packages, marked as Lot A027 with expiration date 02/26/2021. Currently, samples are undergoing complete genome sequencing analysis (WGS) to determine whether Listeria monocytogenes found in these samples matches the outbreak strain. At this time, there is not enough evidence to determine whether this outbreak is related to El Abuelito Fresh Cheese.
Consumers who have purchased the above fresh cheese products are encouraged not to consume them and return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact El Abuelito directly Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. EST at (973) 345-3503.
