Oysters Food Poisoning

Oysters Food Poisoning

Oysters are one of the highest risk food poisoning items you can eat. Oysters are filter feeders and are usually eaten raw, so any environmental issues get passed directly on to diners. Oyster food poisoning is typically associated with vibrio and reports have been received from all coasts.

We went for lunch with a friend on Wednesday and we ordered a mixed seafood platter. It had both hot and cold seafood. The oysters made me sick. I had diarrhea within a few hours. The lunch was the only thing I ate that day. The raw … See More
oysters didn't seem fresh, I had two and couldn't have anymore as it didn't seem right. My friend doesn't eat raw oysters so she didn't get ill.

It was disappointing as at the Fish market, we expect things to be extra fresh.  | Symptoms: Diarrhea

Ate at the buffet on Friday Jan 19th. Had oysters, crab legs, steak and ribs. Few hours later my wife and I both developed intense abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea that lasted for about 18-20 hours. Called the hotel to report but was sent to voicemail. Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reports an outbreak of over 150 cases of suspected gastrointestinal illness. The source appears to be consumption of raw oysters, potentially infected with norovirus, indiscriminately sourced from three particular areas in Mexico: Laguna De Guerrero Negro, Baja California, Mexico; Laguna … See More
Manuela, Baja California, Mexico; and Bahia Salina, Sonora, Mexico.

These specific areas have become a prime focus of the ongoing investigation due to the striking correlation between the consumption of raw oysters procured from these areas and reported cases of suspected norovirus. Public Health is collaborating with the California Department of Public Health to further confirm findings and pin down the exact source.

Public Health has since issued a warning to all consumers advising them to inquire about the origin of raw oysters at restaurants or vendors before consuming. It is crucial that consumers remain informed about the sources of their food and vigilant about the potential risks.

In case you experience vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

The FDA is advising restaurants and food retailers not to serve or sell and to dispose of oysters and consumers not to eat oysters from Sociedad Acuicola GolPac (MX 06 SP) harvested from Bahia Salina, Sonora, Mexico on 12/18/2023 or 12/27/2023 because they may be contaminated with … See More
norovirus. The oysters were distributed to restaurants and retailers in California and may have been distributed to other states as well.

This follows the notification by the California Department of Public Health to the FDA on 1/10/2024 of a norovirus outbreak in San Diego County, CA linked to consumption of oysters traced back to the specific harvest location in Mexico. As an investigation ensues and number of illnesses being measured, the Bahia Salina growing area was closed to harvesting on 1/12/2024 by Mexican Shellfish Authorities.

The oysters, potentially contaminated with norovirus, can cause illness when consumed raw, and induce severe sickness in individuals with compromised immune systems. Even though food tainted with norovirus may appear, smell, and taste normal, symptoms of the illness such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever can occur. The symptoms of norovirus usually manifest 12 to 48 hours after exposure and can last from 1 to 3 days. Severe incidents can lead to dehydration, particularly in young children, older adults and people with other illnesses. If severe dehydration is suspected, contacting healthcare providers is advised.

On the frontlines, restaurants, and retailers are urged to discard any potentially contaminated oysters either by trashing them or returning them to the distributor. It is of key importance to consider cross-contamination prevention by ensuring the cleanliness of food preparation areas and utensils.

Consumers should refrain from consuming these oysters and contact their healthcare provider to report any symptoms. This alert is specifically important for those in California who have recently dined at restaurants in San Diego or Los Angeles that sourced from Sociedad Acuicola GolPac.

The County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) is investigating 41 confirmed and probable cases of norovirus linked to raw oysters from a specific harvesting location in Northwest Mexico. The reported cases originated in mid-December following the consumption of raw oysters from Sonora, Mexico.

The HHSA has … See More
asked restaurants to set aside “Rocky Point oysters” packed by GOLPAC located in Bahia Salina, Sonora, Mexico until further notice. Restaurants or others who purchased oysters from this location are asked to not use them while an investigation of this outbreak takes place.

The linkage between the illness and the consumption of raw oysters was established through the patients' reports of having eaten raw oysters a day or two prior to the onset of symptoms. With age range from 12 to 83 years old, symptomatic individuals experienced nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, but none required hospitalization. Remarkably, some individuals who had not consumed the oysters came down with the illness, suggesting the disease spread within households. Cases to date have been tied to oysters served at three locations of The Fish Shop (Pacific Beach, Point Loma, and Encinitas) restaurants and the Carlsbad Aquafarm. Other locations may emerge during this investigation.

In light of these events, County Public Health advises consumers to inquire about the origin of oysters before consuming them. They emphasize the importance of frequent hand-washing and medical attention in case of illness.

Furthermore, the HHSA is cooperating closely with the California Department of Public Health and the Shellfish Program to probe into the association between the illnesses and the oysters.
