Burritos can cause food poisoning. Typically burritos are a mix of high food poisoning risk ingredients such as tortillas, cooked proteins (chicken, beef, pork), and raw ingredients (guacamole, lettuce, tomato) that can be contaminated by bacteria during production or mishandled before serving.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for meat and poultry products that contain FDA-regulated dairy products, which have been recalled by Rizo-Lopez Foods due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The alert pertains to products bearing the... See More USDA mark of inspection, which consumers are advised not to consume. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

The issue was discovered when establishments informed FSIS that they used potentially contaminated FDA-regulated dairy products from Rizo-Lopez Foods to produce the poultry products. The FDA is continuing its investigation into the dairy products produced by Rizo-Lopez Foods.

The recall involves various brands and products, notably including Amazon Kitchen, RICO, Custom Made Meals, and Trader Joe’s, among others. The products range from chicken burritos, enchiladas with various sauces, bacon-wrapped jalapeno peppers, to chicken elote bowls. These items are noted for having specific lot codes, production dates, and use-by dates, indicating a targeted recall scope. Many of the products were distributed nationwide in the US and others in specific states, check the link below for the details.

FSIS is concerned that some of the affected products may still be in consumers’ or retailers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them, and retailers are urged not to serve or sell them. These products should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.

In case you are experiencing Listeria monocytogenes symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

SK Food Group has issued a public health alert for its ready-to-eat poultry burrito products containing FDA regulated dairy products that have been recalled by Rizo-Lopez Foods, due to concerns that the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The products were distributed nationwide in the US.... See More There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

Consumption of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected. Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn.

The affected product is the 10.53-oz. "amazon kitchen, CHICKEN CHILI VERDE burrito with rice, black beans & monterey jack". The items were produced between June 20, 2023, and December 30, 2023, with best-before-Julian dates starting with 0764, 1384, 1394, and 2694 with expiration dates of 3/16/24, 5/17/24, 5/18/24, and 9/25/24.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or retailers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them.
