Hepatitis A outbreak linked with consumption of dates

3 years ago source eurosurveillance.org

Outbreak

United Kingdom

Public Health England (PHE) Virus Reference Department (VRD) in conjunction with local teams have identified a Hepatitis A outbreak linked to the consumption of dates in England and Wales. As of May 18, 2021, there have been 31 cases (30 confirmed and one probable) and 25 people of the total have required hospitalization. The outbreak investigation is ongoing.

Food chain traceback undertaken by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) identified two batch numbers and one common product, Sainsbury’s Medjool dates imported from Jordan linked to one retailer in the United Kingdom (UK), from which 25 of 31 cases reported purchasing dates. This product was recalled on April 13 announced by FSA.

Possible links between the producer and other suppliers and retailers are being investigated by the FSA through the UK supply chain and in collaboration with the Jordanian authorities.

If you are experiencing food poisoning symptoms, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance.
