Raw Milk Consumer Alert due to campylobacter jejuni

1 year ago source agriculture.ny.gov

232 Lighthall Road, Fort Plain, 13339 New York, United States

####Update 24 October 2024:

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has issued an updated consumer alert regarding unpasteurized raw milk from HuHill Farm, located at 232 Lighthall Road, Fort Plain, NY, due to repeated contamination with Campylobacter jejuni. This is the second time in three months that raw milk from HuHill Farm has tested positive for Campylobacter during routine testing by state inspectors. No confirmed illnesses have been reported in connection with this contamination. The producer is prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent tests confirm the product is free of contamination.

- On October 17, 2024, the farm was notified of a preliminary positive test result, and on October 21, 2024, further laboratory testing confirmed the presence of Campylobacter jejuni.
- In an earlier incident in August 2024, HuHill Farm's raw milk was also found to be contaminated with Campylobacter, leading to a similar recall.

Consumers should note that raw milk does not provide the protection of pasteurization, which kills harmful bacteria and helps prevent serious illnesses. Consumers are urged to dispose of any raw milk purchased from HuHill Farm immediately.

6 October 2024:

Consumer alert issued by New York State Department of Agriculture, consumers in Montgomery County and surrounding areas have been warned against consuming unpasteurized raw milk from HuHill Farm due to potential contamination with Campylobacter jejuni. The farm is located at 232 Lighthall Road, Fort Plain, New York.

Campylobacter infections cause complications, such as irritable bowel syndrome, temporary paralysis, and arthritis. In people with weakened immune systems, such as those with a blood disorder, with AIDS, or receiving chemotherapy, Campylobacter occasionally spreads to the bloodstream and causes a life-threatening infection.

On August 1, 2024, the producer was notified of a preliminary positive test result. Further laboratory testing, completed on August 5, 2024, confirmed the presence of Campylobacter jejuni in the raw milk sample. The producer is now prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of this harmful bacteria.

It is important to note that raw milk does not provide the protection of pasteurization. Pasteurization is a process that heats milk to a specific temperature for a specific amount of time.
