Gaston Gazette News published that Gaston County health officials informed about a spike in Hepatitis A cases that began with chronic drug users, but has now spread to a wider population. They have reported more than 120 cases this year, including 70 cases in the first three months of the year, and more than 70% of the cases reported this year have required hospital intervention.

According to the news some of the Hepatitis A cases have been connected to food-related incidents, although health officials would not name the businesses involved. Also, County health officials have done outreach to provide Hepatitis A vaccines to high-risk groups, including drug rehabilitation centers.
