Les oignons peuvent être une source d'intoxication alimentaire. En 2021, des oignons ont été rappelés après avoir provoqué une épidémie de Salmonella affectant plus de 1 000 personnes aux États-Unis. Une infection à Salmonella survient souvent 12 à 72 heures après la consommation et est associée à des crampes d'estomac et à de la diarrhée.
