Jif Peanut Butter products - linked to Salmonella Outbreak

1 year ago source www.fda.gov

Outbreak

United States

The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners, are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Senftenberg infections linked to certain Jif peanut butter products produced at the J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky. As of May 21, 2022, a total of 14 people infected with Salmonella have been reported from 12 states. Two people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Four of five (80%) sick people reported eating different types of Jif brand peanut butter before getting sick. Epidemiologic evidence indicates that Jif brand peanut butter produced in the J.M. Smucker Company facility located in Lexington, KY, is the likely cause of illnesses in this outbreak.

J.M. Smucker Company has voluntarily recalled certain Jif brand peanut butter products that have the lot code numbers between 1274425 – 2140425, only if the first seven digits end with 425 (manufactured in Lexington, KY), in that case, consumers should wash and sanitize surfaces and utensils that could have touched the peanut butter. This product has a two-year shelf life so consumers should check any Jif peanut butter in their home. Photo examples and a list of UPC codes are included below.

Most people infected with Salmonella will begin to develop symptoms 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness, salmonellosis, usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment. Most people with salmonellosis develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. More severe cases of salmonellosis may include a high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, a rash, blood in the urine or stool, and in some cases may become fatal.

In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance.
