Final update August 23, 2023
CDC announced that this outbreak is over. As of August 23, 2023, a total of 18 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella were reported from 4 states (Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York). 7 people have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from April 27, 2023, through July 6, 2023. Ground beef was the only common food people reported eating. Of the people who remembered the type of ground beef they ate, most reported eating 80% lean ground beef before they got sick.
State and local public health officials interviewed people about the foods they ate in the week before they got sick. Of the 16 people interviewed, 10 (63%) reported eating ground beef. Nine sick people reported purchasing the ground beef from ShopRite locations in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. Seven of these people specifically reported purchasing 80% lean ground beef products. Two people reported purchasing ground beef products from ShopRite but could not remember the type of ground beef. Epidemiologic showed that ground beef was the likely source of the outbreak. However, there were not enough other data to identify a common source of the ground beef.

The CDC along with public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) are investigating the source of a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul infections. As of July 24, 2023, 16 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from four states (Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York). 6 people have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported.
Multiple sick individuals recalled consuming 80% lean ground beef from ShopRite stores in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York prior to becoming ill. Ground beef was the only food commonly reported among the cases. Investigators are now working to determine the exact source facility and production lots of the ground beef products consumed by affected individuals. The investigation aims to facilitate a recall if a specific producer or distributor is identified as the contamination origin.
In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
