Outbreak
United States
The CDC and the FDA are investigating a food outbreak linked to certain cinnamon-containing apple purée and applesauce products. The outbreak has been connected to elevated blood lead levels in children. The FDA's product testing has identified high levels of chromium, in addition to lead, in the cinnamon samples and recalled applesauce pouch products. The CDC has received reports from 44 states, with a total of 422 cases, including 101 confirmed cases, 284 probable cases, and 37 suspect cases. The agency found elevated levels of lead and chromium in the cinnamon-containing apple purée and applesauce products. The exact form of chromium in the recalled products is unclear, but lead chromate, a known carcinogen, has previously been reported as a contaminant in spices and foods. The health effects of consuming food contaminated with chromium compounds such as lead chromate are not well understood, but can include irritation and ulcers in the stomach and small intestine, and anemia.
The investigation is ongoing, and consumers are advised to discard all affected products and consult with their healthcare provider if they have consumed any of the recalled items.
If you are experiencing symptoms after eating this product it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist seek medical attention.
